PRESS RELEASE FOR SEASONAIRES: THE SERIES

27TH OCTOBER 2010

Each summer a growing number of lads and lasses come from far and wide to live the life of bikes and bikes and bikes. It’s the dream of riding bikes that brings them here, but the reality is that there are deeper reasons that keep them here. Some people come for a visit and never leave. Some come to find something specific but end up learning something entirely different. Some come alone, some come with friends but everyone leaves with more.

People uproot from their lives elsewhere to be in Whistler. Some make giant life changes, other have had their lives changed by one short visit to Whistler. Some are here for just one summer, some will be here forever more, either as a permanent fixture or a seasonal migratory bird.

There are thousands of stories and tales to tell, but filmer Tom Grundy, super shooter Mattias Fredriksson and myself grabbed just five of them to give you a brief glimpse of living the dream.

On the face of it this series is just about riding bikes in Whistler. However this series hopes to look beyond this and explore the motivations of people to radically alter their lives just to ride bikes as much as they can. We chose five people and used their particular experiences as a magnifying glass to be able to discover more about a few of the motivations for some people to make bikes their life.

The following is five short stories, five characters, five windows and five motivations.

Seasonaires is a five part series that will be aired weekly starting the third week in October and coincides with an eight page feature of the same title in issue 105 of DIRT MAGAZINE.

Tom Grundy, 19, is from England and is a freelance videographer. Over the past year he has been filming for Redbull reporter and creating his own monthly webisodes, The Tom Grundy Webisodes. He spent three months living in Whistler this past summer, all the whilst documenting the place and it’s people from within. As well as riding the bike park with 8 of his best friends. He then headed home, back to the UK to edit Seasonaires into five tales of Summer.

Seb Kemp is a freelance writer who is based anywhere anytime. Originally from the UK, he left four and half years ago and has since found himself on a spiraling world odyssey of some of the best riding spots in the world. He helped Tom script and story tell this story as well as finding the “talent” for this series, interviewing them, herding them, and generally putting a boot up the arse of them when it came down to shooting and filming for this project. He is also hated on the internet.

Mattias Fredriksson is one of the worlds top action sports photographers. His work adorns ski and bike magazines all over the world as well as representing commercial photography as well. Every winter and summer Mattias spends much of his time traveling to the worlds top riding and skiing destinations and he uses his Nikon camera and his incredible skills as a photographer to document the action and culture. For his part he shot five beautiful portraits that are used in the eight page Seasonaires feature in issue 105 of DIRT MAGAZINE.
